Frankie Dettori strikes on Star Catcher in Fillies & Mares Stakes at Ascot

Star Catcher rounded her campaign off with Success from the Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes at Ascot.

John Gosden’s filly was a maiden at the start of the year, with finished sixth on her only juvenile start at Chelmsford. However, a good example can now be made for being the best middle-distance filly of her generation after incorporating this Group One trophy to her sooner big-race wins this season at the Ribblesdale in Royal Ascot, the Irish Oaks at the Curragh and the Prix Vermeille in Paris. With Frankie Dettori in the saddle, the girl of Ocean The Stars was the 7-4 favourite to offer a Champions Day victory in as many years following the back-to-back wins of this brilliant Cracksman in the Champion Stakes to her Anthony Oppenheimer. It wasn’t all plain sailing for the market leader as she had been hard at the office halfway up the home straight – and was briefly short of space after Sun Maiden drifted round the track, leaving Star Catcher the meat in the sandwich between her and Delphinia contrary to the far rail. Gosden’s charge rallied courageously getting the best of Delphinia using also the Fleeting fourth after falling traffic problems and also Sun Maiden third. Dettori was making it winner amount 18 in Group One level this season, and bounced back following defeat for Stradivarius at the Extended Distance Cup. He said:”Obviously I’m still somewhat sour about Stradivarius, however, the ground is a bit worse than we thought. I’ve gone from crying for grinning in half an hour. “She’s lovely, she is hard – I think she is staying in training, using a little bit of luck, and she’s a terrific filly. “She’s supplied me with my 250th Group One and 18th this season, so I adore her.” Read more:
